Website of the developer: Recyclart

Description

This application, an adaptation of the website for mobile devices, offers you creative ways to do crafts from waste materials, giving your waste a second chance. Thus, you can discover, for example, how to recycle plastic bottles or make decorative items from waste materials. It should be noted, however, that the purpose of many examples is not to explain the procedure step by step, but rather to show you the final result of a design. Not in vain, some of the creations are the work of artists who sell their designs through the Etsy website.

The app’s home screen collects the latest ideas for recycling shared by the community. If you want to contribute and make your skills known, you only need to open a free account from the web.

In the lower part you have the following options (in the Android version are in a pop-up side menu):

  • Latest posts, home screen with the latest published projects.
  • Subscriptions, which allows you to access the latest updates for the categories you have subscribed to previously.
  • Favorites, section where you can save your favorite ideas.

Finally, the option represented by ellipsis allows you to access the 26 categories included in the application (in the web version you can view them in a more orderly way). Browse through them, you can find inspiration for, for example, recycle cardboard boxes and turning them into toy trains or create art from waste.

Analysis

Reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. This is part of the philosophy on which the so-called circular economy is based, a system proposed as a solution to the enormous amount of waste produced each day. One of its main characteristics is the use of waste as a resource for the manufacture of new objects. This economic transformation, contemplated in the Europe 2020 Strategy, aims to promote a «smart, sustainable and inclusive growth» that uses resources efficiently and reduces carbon emissions.

Recyclart’s objective is also this, although the application is focused from a domestic perspective aimed at reducing the volume of waste generated in households, discovering new ways to reuse the objects that surround us. Although the approach is very good and both the web and the respective applications are full of, for example, craft ideas for kids with waste material, perhaps some more detailed explanations are missing. The images or videos alleviate some of these shortcomings, but in many cases it takes a certain degree of imagination on the part of the user to achieve a result similar to that shown in the app or the web. Similarly, from an operational point of view, the speed with which content is uploaded leaves a little to be desired, and it is not known whether this is a temporary problem. It should also be noted that during the tests carried out, the Android version of the app has presented numerous problems that have made its use unfeasible.
